About the Community Business Support Service

The Community Business Support Service is provided free to Lewisham residents, businesses and community organisations.  It combines a caring and empathetic approach with solid business experience and sector expertise.

The CBSS sometimes needs to come up with creative solutions for the challenges facing its clients. Typical clients of the service would not be people who easily approach mainstream agencies for support. They are likely to be long-term unemployed, single parents, ex-offenders, and people from refugee or minority ethnic communities (e.g.Somali or Vietnamese).

Advisers who are contracted to deliver the service are self-employed themselves and aspire to move clients from unemployment to some form of economic activity; to help existing businesses weather difficult times and safeguard jobs; and to help selected community organisations to diversify their funding streams and improve efficiency.  They refer clients for specialised advice or employment training and support where appropriate.
